The Japanese American Citizens League Seattle Chapter will hold its 94th Annual Banquet, “Sports and Social Justice,” on April 2.
The chapter will feature “the Japanese and Asian Pacific Islander game changers who have broken bar riers through athletes.” Aaron Levine, sports director at Q13 Fox News, will be an emcee, Seat tle University professor Marie Wong will speak about the history of the Japanese American baseball league and author Ken Mochizuki will read his famous book, “Baseball Saved Us.”
“From Michelle Kwan to Ichiro, so many athletes of Asian ancestry continue to inspire our communities and break through racial stereotypes in the United States,” said chapter president Sarah Baker. “We aim to give visibility to these role models and celebrate their accomplishments, while also examining the role that sports have had in the history of Japanese Americans.”
The banquet will also recognize various honorees including Frank and Penny Fukui of Woodburn Co. for Community Corporate Engagement, Akemi Matsumoto of APACE for Community Engagement, Deputy Mayor Hyeok Kim for Civil Rights and North Seattle College for Special Recognition for Championing Youth.
The event’s doors will open at 5:30 p.m. at SODO Park as the formal program begins from 6 – 9 p.m. Tickets are $90 for individuals and $75 for students.
