Free film screening and discussion

April 11 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Free

The Wakasa Memorial Committee will hold a livestream of three short films about the Wakasa memorial at 6 pm PDT with a discussion/Q&A.

It will focus on how the symbolic paper sculpture — the Wakasa Spirit Stone — came about and its life so far as a movable memorial to places where Nikkei were killed by the military at the WWII Japanese American concentration camps.

The paper stone has traveled to Topaz, Utah; Tule Lake, CA; and in two weeks it will be transported to the Manzanar Pilgrimage in eastern CA. It is placed at the sites where the shootings occurred. Forgotten histories.

The lantern also had an installation at the SF Asian Art Museum in February, for Day of Remembrance.

Friday commemorates the day that Wakasa was shot and killed 82 years ago. We decided to remember this day with a digital gathering around his lantern.

Thank you and hope to see you!
