Tadaima art project for MOHAI

Seattle’s Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI) is preparing an exhibit featuring Hinamatsuri (Girls Day) dolls entrusted to Bailey Gatzert Elementary School in 1942. These dolls were given to Principal Ada Mahon for safekeeping by Japanese American families who were forcibly removed from their Seattle neighborhood and sent to incarceration camps. The dolls were transferred to MOHAI’s care in 1973 and will be displayed from February to April 2026.
In conjunction with this exhibit, I am creating an art piece inspired by traditional byobu folding screens, tentatively titled Tadaima (I’m home). This project will include painted portraits based on historic photographs of the school’s predominantly Japanese American students before World War II, as well as contemporary images of individuals who were incarcerated and their descendants.
I am reaching out to seek the incarcerated persons and their descendants who reside(d) in or Washington state. I greatly appreciate your assistance in sharing photographs for this research-based project.
Photos and info will be collected until October 7, 2025.
