When you think of Taiwan, what comes to mind? Boba? Taipei 101? What about night markets? Taiwan is largely known for its night markets, which are evening festivals full of food, games, activities, and entertainment that bring Taiwan’s culture to life. Night markets of all sizes attract large numbers of tourists and locals for the food and lively ambiance. Instead of having to go to Taiwan to experience this, the Taiwanese Student Association (TSA) at the University of Washington will bring the night market to you. TSA is a non-profit student-led organization that aims to share the beauty of Taiwanese culture. Since 2001, they have held a yearly night market in the spring, which has become known as the UW Night Market. This year marks TSA’s 19th annual Night Market, which will be held on May 11, 2019 at Red Square and the Quad on the University of Washington Seattle Campus.
The UW Night Market started off small and has been growing more and more each year, with last year’s Night Market attracting over 9,000 attendees! The Quad is filled with traditional Taiwanese games while Red Square is lined with vendors selling all sorts of food such as boba tea, stinky tofu, bubble waffles, deep fried squid, and various other Taiwanese food. Last year, there were 30 vendors at the Night Market, which included big names such as Boiling Point, Ramen Santouka, and Seattle Best Tea. With new vendors added every year, the food options are endless.
