Portland Shishimai Kai at Oshogatsu

Performance and discussion by Portland Shishimai Kai at Portland Japanese Garden. Program includes Edo Kotobuki Jishi, the celebratory traditional lion dance of Tokyo. Three musicians (taiko drums, shinobue flute, atarigane percussion) accompany the shishimai dancer who performs an intricate series of movements such as jumping over the mountain, looking for food, eating a mikan orange, scratching the ear, chasing a butterfly, and much more. The shishimai has been performed for hundreds of years in Japan to bring good luck to communities and chase away evil.
