Oshogatsu 2019: Celebrating the New Year and the Gaihozu Map Collection

Join us in celebrating the New Year with seasonal Japanese snacks and a chance to see Gaihozu, Japanese military maps, held by the East Asia Library. Gaihozu are topographic maps covering the areas of the former Japanese imperial territories (Gaiho), created by the Japanese military from the 1880s until the end of World War II.
How were Gaihozu made? Why is such a map collection at UW? How can scholars today use this type of collection in their research? Japanese Collection Librarian Azusa Tanaka will present the history of Gaihozu map making and provenance of the UW’s Gaihozu collection. Professor Mark Metzler, a senior historian of modern Japan at the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies, will speak about the potential use of the Gaihozu for research.
