Five thousand medals are awarded during the Olympic and Paralympic games. As of Wednesday, Japan’s Olympic Committee is asking citizens to donate old mobile phones and small household appliances in order to collect the eight tons of metal necessary for the medals. The drive is in an attempt to promote sustainability while cutting costs and engaging the community in the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic preparations. NTT DoCoMo Inc. and the Japan Environmental Sanitation Center will be working together and setting up collection boxes in NTT DoCoMo’s local offices and stores starting in April.
