‘Pig Day Out’ at Pike Place Market

by Bruce Rutledge, the North American Post

The Pike Place Market Foundation will be celebrating the Year of the Pig/Boar this March 1 with a day of prizes, events, and pig races. Festivities kick off at 11am with a chance tow in hotel packages, custom art, and more.

Events will be held throughout the day, including the unveiling of JuJu, the Golden Pearl, a pig sculpture created by local artist Zuolie Deng. Along the North Cobblestones at the Market, pig races will be held from 1pm. The pigs will run on a track of wood shavings to protect the hooves. The foundation is working with All-Alaskan Racing Pigs to make sure the pigs are well taken care of during the races.

The Pig Pen Beer Garden & S’winery will be open from 1 to 7:30 at the MarketFront, providing sweeping views of Elliott Bay and what remains of the Viaduct.

Proceeds from the event go to support the homeless and low-income communities around the Market.

The bill now needs to move out of committee. The cities of Ocean Shores and Long Beach have written letters of support.

There is an online petition people can sign to show their support for the bill: http://projectrazorclam.org/petition/
