Trump Against TPP

In his inaugural address, Trump identified one of his new administration’s priorities to be U.S. withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which has been an agreement among 12 countries around the Pacific including the U.S. and Japan.

The TPP is a “pact aimed to deepen economic ties between these nations, slashing tariffs and fostering trade to boost growth,” according to the BBC. So far, out of the 12 needed, Japan is the only country to have ratified the pact. Some in the U.S. have scrutinized the TPP to be the harbinger of negative economic change. The withdrawal of the U.S. would essentially call the entire deal off since the TPP’s conditions require at least half of the countries comprising 85% of the collective’s economic output to ratify it by February of 2018.
