That legacy continues with MOR\u2019s 20<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0season,\u00a0<em>Voices of Witness<\/em>, featuring four new music commissions inspired by Japanese and Japanese American wartime experience by composers Ryuichi Sakamoto, Keiko Fujiie and Christophe Chagnard. We\u2019re humbled to share stories of Japanese wartime experience with these commissions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The November 5 concert features the world premieres of new works by composers\u00a0<strong>Ryuichi Sakamoto<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Keiko Fujiie<\/strong>\u00a0that remember the atomic bombing victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Sakamoto\u2019s\u00a0<strong><em>Snow Falls<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0draws on melodies from his film score for \u201cNagasaki: Memories of My Son.\u201d It sets an iconic poem of that name, both in the original Japanese and in an English translation by Empress Michiko. Fujiie\u2019s song cycle\u00a0<strong><em>Wilderness Mute<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is based on texts by Japanese poets from Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The program also features guest artist Robert Orth in\u00a0<strong>Paul Schoenfield\u2019s\u00a0<em>Sparks of Glory<\/em>,\u00a0<\/strong>four portraits of Holocaust defiance taken from the true accounts of heroes too modest to recognize their own heroism. Also, little-known pieces created by French, British and Dutch composers in prison and concentration camps.<\/p>\n<p>The May 20 concert unveils\u00a0<strong><em>Gaman\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>by Seattle-based composer Christophe Chagnard. The work\u2019s title refers to the struggle to endure the unbearable with patience and dignity, focusing on the experience of people of Japanese ancestry forced into incarceration camps during World War II. It combines traditional Japanese and classical Western instruments, bringing a powerful story to life through testimonies of the words and images created by three artists and poets during their captivity in the Minidoka camp. The concert also features Sakamoto&#8217;s second MOR commission,\u00a0<strong>NAM\u00c9<\/strong>, remembering all who perished in World War II. Chamber music by\u00a0<strong>Erwin Schulhoff<\/strong>\u00a0showcases an audacious talent whose life ended in a Nazi concentration camp.\u00a0<strong>Songs from the Terez\u00edn concentration camp\u00a0<\/strong>inspire with their remarkable resilience of spirit.<\/p>\n<p>The four new commissions by Sakamoto, Fujiie and Chagnard will also be featured in MOR\u2019s fourth annual Bay Area concert at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music on May 24, 2018 at 7:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The 2017-18 season features MOR\u2019s chamber ensemble drawn from the ranks of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattlesymphony.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Seattle Symphony<\/a>, joined by guest artists baritone\/narrator Robert Orth; soprano Ann Moss; and Ringtaro and Asako Tateishi of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.japantaiko.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Seattle\u2019s School of Taiko<\/a>.
