Over each eight-week session\, apprentices work alongside professional teaching artists to learn basic art skills\, research\, design\, and install public art throughout King County\, WA. In addition to honing their painting skills\, teens develop the interpersonal and professional skills needed to thrive in a workplace. We prioritize youth who are BIPOC\, LGBTQIA+\, and those who qualify for free and reduced lunch. All youth apprentices receive a stipend. \nThis spring\, we are offering the Mural Apprentice Program (MAP) in Kirkland at Kirkland Arts Center\, in the Chinatown-International District at the Urban ArtWorks’ studio\, and in Burien at Highline High School. \nChinatown-International District MAP \nProgram Dates/Times:\nDates: March 4 – May 1 (no meetings April 14-18)\nTimes: Tuesdays\, Wednesdays\, and Thursdays\, 5pm – 7pm\nLocation: Urban ArtWorks Studio at 815 Seattle Blvd S Suite B7\, Seattle\, WA 98134 \nApplications are due by 11:59pm on February 7\, 2025.\nPriority will be given to those who submit on time\, however\, all applications will be accepted and youth may be put on a wait list.\nLearn more in the application: https://bit.ly/MAP_CID_Spring25 \nKirkland MAP \nProgram Dates/Times:\nDates: March 11 – May 7 (No meetings the week of April 14)\nTimes: Tuesdays and Wednesdays\, 5:00pm – 7:00pm\nLocation: Kirkland Arts Center at 620 Market Street\, Kirkland\, WA 98033 \nApplications are due by 11:59pm on February 12\, 2025.\nPriority will be given to those who submit on time\, however\, all applications will be accepted and youth may be put on a wait list.\nLearn more in the application: https://bit.ly/MAP_KAC_Spring25 \nBurien MAP \nThis MAP session is held in partnership with Highline High School. SUMMARY:Free film screening and discussion
DESCRIPTION:The Wakasa Memorial Committee will hold a livestream of three short films about the Wakasa memorial at 6 pm PDT with a discussion/Q&A. \nIt will focus on how the symbolic paper sculpture — the Wakasa Spirit Stone — came about and its life so far as a movable memorial to places where Nikkei were killed by the military at the WWII Japanese American concentration camps. \nThe paper stone has traveled to Topaz\, Utah; Tule Lake\, CA; and in two weeks it will be transported to the Manzanar Pilgrimage in eastern CA. It is placed at the sites where the shootings occurred. Forgotten histories. \nThe lantern also had an installation at the SF Asian Art Museum in February\, for Day of Remembrance. \nFriday commemorates the day that Wakasa was shot and killed 82 years ago. We decided to remember this day with a digital gathering around his lantern. \nThank you and hope to see you!

SUMMARY:Griffith and Patricia Way Lecture 2025
DESCRIPTION:‘Consolidating Constitutional Legitimacy in Japan: Concepts\, Metrics\, and Pathways Forward’ with Kenneth Mori McElwain\, University of Tokyo \nJoin us for the 2025 Griffith and Patricia Way Lecture for a presentation by Professor Kenneth Mori McElwain of the Institute of Social Science\, University of Tokyo. \nAmidst global challenges to established institutions\, rights\, and norms\, the role of constitutions in preserving democratic governance has become ever more vital. Japan offers a compelling case: its constitution\, the world’s oldest unamended national charter\, faces growing elite-driven calls for fundamental revision. However\, public support for these changes remains uncertain\, and reforms lacking legitimacy risk weakening the constitution’s ability to constrain government overreach. This talk develops a framework for understanding and assessing constitutional legitimacy. \nLecture followed by reception. Free and open to the public. Registration appreciated. Go to: bit.ly/4ijE2UR\nSponsored by the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies Japan Studies Program and made possible by the Griffith and Patricia Way Lecture endowment.

SUMMARY:For Immediate Release: MOTHER OF EXILES Opening April 22 at UW School of Drama
DESCRIPTION:IMMEDIATE RELEASE \nMedia Contact:\nCourtney D. Clark\ncclark75@uw.edu\n206-221-6797 \nUniversity of Washington School of Drama Presents Mother of Exiles \nA Time-Jumping Epic of Migration\, Memory\, and the Resilience of Hope \nSEATTLE\, WA – The University of Washington School of Drama proudly presents Mother of Exiles by Jessica Huang\, an imaginative and emotionally rich journey across 150 years of migration\, survival\, and familial legacy. Directed by first-year MFA directors REN and Sebastián Bravo Montenegro\, the production runs April 22–26\, 2025\, at the Glenn Hughes Penthouse Theatre\, with a preview performance on April 18 at 7:30 p.m. \nMOTHER OF EXILES \nBy Jessica Huang\nDirected by REN & Sebastián Bravo Montenegro \nWhen: April 22–26\, 2025\nWhere: Glenn Hughes Penthouse Theatre\, 1803 NE 45th Street\, Seattle\, WA\nTickets: $10–$22 \nA MULTI-GENERATIONAL STORY ROOTED IN MIGRATION\, REBIRTH\, AND HOPE \nSet across three timelines—1898 California\, 1998 Miami\, and 2063 ocean-bound America—Mother of Exiles is a vivid\, poetic journey through the lives of one family\, shaped by waves of political upheaval and migration. As history repeats and reinvents itself\, this deeply personal story asks: What are we doing—spiritually\, socially\, politically—to nurture life? \n“The play presents this incredible life force that feels unstoppable\,” the directors shared. “Even through loss and sacrifice\, new life insists on growing.” \nThis Producing Artists Laboratory production is a first-of-its-kind collaboration between first-year MFA directors and designers and second-year MFA actors. That same intergenerational spirit is reflected on stage\, where six actors carry the weight and joy of these layered\, interconnected roles across eras. \nDIRECTORS’ VISION: SOFTNESS AS RESISTANCE\, TENDERNESS AS TRANSFORMATION \n“There’s something deeply radical in how this play centers tenderness\,” say REN and Bravo Montenegro. “Amidst climate catastrophe and exile\, the characters still choose to hold each other.”\nTheir co-direction embraces multiplicity—honoring both historical specificity and speculative futures\, trauma and joy\, loss\, and levity.\n“Levity doesn’t undercut the gravity—it sits beside it. The play insists on beauty and joy\, even in the darkest times\,” say REN and Bravo Montenegro.\nThe directors also shared that one line from the play continues to shape their vision:\n“Your purpose is to be a bridge\, not a border.” \n“That’s the heart of our vision\,” they explain. “We’re constantly asking: Are we building connections or shutting people out? Are we creating spaces where life can grow\, or reinforcing barriers?” \n“We see this question come into play with the character of Braulio\, who believes he understands his purpose until he’s forced to question everything. That arc—of interrogating one’s purpose—resonates deeply with us as directors\, as artists\, and as people. Who\, or what\, do our efforts in this life serve?”\nAudiences will encounter recurring relationships and themes that echo across timelines\, offering an invitation to reflect on what we carry through generations—and what we might finally set down. \nCAST & CREATIVE TEAM \nCast: \nEddie Loi: Karis Ho**\nModesto/Braulio Loi: Jerik Fernandez*\nGuard/Mick/Henry: John Austin**\nTata/Claudia López: Adriana Gonzales*\nMidwife/Sarge/Karina López-Loi: Marena Kleinpeter*\nMissionary/Sofía/Mimi López-Loi: Betzabeth Gonzalez*\nAncestors: Minki Bai*\, Joo Kim˚\, Mikey Flores\, Yeonshin Kim* \nCreative Team: \nDirectors: Sebastián Bravo Montenegro* & Ren*\nScenic Designer: Eunice Han*\nCostume Designers: Nour Afifi* & Evie Hawkins*\nLighting Designer: Andy Smith**\nSound Designer: M.L. It’s a play for anyone who’s ever wondered how their family got here—or where we’re all headed next. \nFor interviews\, press tickets\, or more information\, contact:\nCourtney D.
