SUMMARY:Classical Japanese Dance: Performance\, Talk\, and Workshop with Kaya
DESCRIPTION:Nihon Buyo artist Kazuko Kaya Yamazaki will perform two solo pieces\, an excerpt from a Kabuki dance that premiered in 1820 and another from a celebratory piece danced to the oldest nagauta song\, composed around 1720. \nFollowing the performance\, Kaya will give a short talk about classical Japanese dance and what she has learned through her decades of experience as a performer\, teacher\, and anthropologist. \nAfter the short talk\, Kaya will give a workshop. No prior experience is necessary to participate. You may also choose to watch rather than participate. The workshop will have three parts. It will begin with basic foot\, hand\, and head movements and their combination. The second part will be about rhythmic patterns called yatton and tottan\, performed with stamping\, chanting\, and iki (breath). Finally\, participants will have a hands-on (literally!) experience of learning how to use the sensu (Japanese “fan” for dancing). \nAll ages are welcome.

DESCRIPTION:Candle-lit lanterns will spark hope at From Hiroshima to Hope\, Seattle’s annual lantern-floating peace ceremony\, on Sunday evening\, August 6 at Green Lake. The event includes music\, poetry\, dance\, speakers\, and candle-lit lanterns floating on the lake. Marking the 78th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki\, From Hiroshima to Hope honors the bombings’ victims and all victims of war and violence. \nThe event begins at 6:00 PM with lantern preparation. The family program begins at 7:00 PM and includes the popular Japanese American drum performance group\, Seattle Kokon Taiko. This year also features a dance performance by Gabrielle Nomura Gainor\, a dancer/choreographer who will present a piece titled “Sadako and the Cranes.” The candle-lit lantern ceremony begins at 8:15 p.m.\, with lanterns floating on the lake at dusk. \nFrom Hiroshima to Hope is created annually by the non-profit organization\, From Hiroshima to Hope\, and is sponsored by local community organizations. DESCRIPTION:In this class\, Northwest Maritime Center will build a traditional Japanese Boat using the construction as a backdrop exploring both the technical aspects of boatbuilding but also the cultural underpinnings of apprentice learning. Students will work with Japanese hand tools used in boatbuilding and learn specific techniques such as fitting plant seems using saws and making nail holes with special chisels. The design and evolution of the Japanese boats will be discussed along with the loss of traditional skills and response in contemporary Japan.

Today\, kendama competitions are held around the world\, and the contestants compete in a variety of formats including tricks\, speed battles and freestyle. \nNick Gallagher is the winner of 2018 Gloken Kendama World Cup held in Hiroshima\, Japan.
