SUMMARY:Day of Remembrance: Open House and Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:In commemoration of Executive Order 9066\, Mukai Farm & Garden will host an Open House from 1pm – 4pm on February 25 with self guided tours of the 1926 built farmstead\, which houses an exhibit covering the 120+ years of Japanese presence on Vashon\, including the impact of the internments.\nFollowing the Open House will be a panel presentation by Dr. Jade Agua and Dr. Joseph Okimoto. The presentation will include a screening of Dartmouth University’s “Conversations That Matter” featuring Dr. Okimoto discussing anti-Japanese propaganda created by Theodor Geisel AKA Dr Seuss.\nDr. Okimoto is a former Friends of Mukai Board Member and retired Psychiatrist with Asian Counseling and Referral Services. SUMMARY:5th annual SEIJIN-shiki USA
DESCRIPTION:  \nJIA Foundation\, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Japan in Seattle\, is proud to announce the fifth annual SEIJIN-shiki USA\, a Japanese-style Coming of Age Celebration. This highly anticipated event is scheduled to take place on January 13\, 2024\, at Bellevue College Carlson Theatre. \nSEIJIN-shiki\, the celebrated Japanese coming-of-age tradition\, is a cherished annual event throughout Japan. It provides a platform for the community’s emerging young adults\, known as new SEIJIN\, to be officially acknowledged. Since 2020\, JIA Foundation has been dedicated to bringing this age-old tradition to the United States\, enriching it with JIA’s original and unique touch. \nThe primary aim of this event is to bring together Japanese and Japanese-American youth who have grown up in the United States\, as well as anyone with an affinity for Japan. Our goal is to provide support and encouragement to these new SEIJIN as they embark on their journey into adulthood and confidently navigate American society. \nParticipants from previous years have lauded the event for offering a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of Japanese traditions\, allowing them to rediscover their own cultural identities. With inclusivity at its core\, the event is conducted entirely in English\, with the vision of establishing a new American tradition where the coming-of-age celebration becomes a common practice. \nSEIJIN-shiki USA is an exceptional occasion for all individuals\, regardless of their nationality\, to share and experience the beauty of Japanese culture. It’s a chance to forge lasting friendships among the members of the “Class of SEIJIN 2024.” \n5th annual SEIJIN-shiki USA Celebration details \nSlogan: “Celebrating Wisdom\, Courage and Growth” \nDate: Saturday\, January 13\,2024 2:30pm (Pacific Time)\nVenue: Bellevue College Carlson Theatre\n            (3000 Landerholm Cir. SUMMARY:Podcast new episode | with Jay Rubin\, the author of The Sun Gods
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the second season of “beyond generations\,” a podcast by Monica. It is about the incarceration of the Japanese American people during WWII. Its focus is on what people today are doing so that we will learn about and from it and the history will not repeat itself. \nThe guest in this episode is Jay Rubin. His work includes Haruki Murakami’s Norwegian Wood and 1Q84. \nIn this episode\, Jay will talk about how he got interested in studying Japanese\, how his moving to Seattle made him start working on the Sun Gods\, and how crucial it was for him to have a deep experience with the Japanese language and people to write this story. \nListen to this episode on Apple Podcasts\, Spotify\, Google Podcasts and Amazon Music. \nJoin our community on Instagram @beyondgenerations.seattle to learn more. \n(Jay Rubin photo by Gen Rubin)
