SUMMARY:6th SEIJIN-shiki USA
DESCRIPTION:JIA Foundation\, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Japan in Seattle\, is proud to announce the 6th SEIJIN-shiki USA\, a Japanese-style Coming of Age Celebration. This highly anticipated event is scheduled to take place on January 19\, 2025 at Meydenbauer Center Theatre in Bellevue\, WA. \nSEIJIN-shiki is a cherished annual event throughout Japan. It provides a platform for the community’s emerging young adults\, known as new SEIJINs\, to be officially acknowledged as adults and new members of the society. \nSince 2020\, JIA Foundation has been dedicated to bringing this age-old tradition to the United States\, enriching it with JIA Foundation’s original and unique touch. \nThe 6th SEIJIN-shiki USA welcomes anyone whose birthday falls between 2003 and 2005. \nOur goal is to provide support and encouragement to these new SEIJINs\, who come from diverse national and cultural backgrounds\, as they embark on their journey into adulthood. With inclusivity at its core\, the celebration is conducted entirely in English\, with the vision of creating a new American tradition where coming-of-age celebrations become a shared common practice. \nParticipants from previous years have praised the celebration for offering a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of Japanese traditions\, allowing them to rediscover their own cultural identities. \nSEIJIN-shiki USA is an exceptional occasion open to all\, regardless of their nationality\, ethnicity or Japanese language proficiency.to share in the beauty of Japanese culture. It is also an opportunity to forge lasting friendships among the members of the “Class of SEIJIN 2025.”

SUMMARY:Latin America and Left-Wing Politics in Post-ANPO Japanese Literature
DESCRIPTION:The 1959 and 1960 protests in Japan against the U.S.-Japan Security Treaty (ANPO) reflected public discontent with military alliances and foreign influence\, as well as a desire for national autonomy and peace after World War II. Within this context\, many Japanese intellectuals drew connections between their struggles and those of marginalized groups worldwide\, incorporating themes of revolution and resistance against oppressive regimes\, thus creating a rich cultural dialogue with other regions. \nJoin Matias Chiappe Ippolito (El Colegio de México) as he provides a brief history of the connections between Latin America\, left-wing politics\, and Japanese literature in the post-war period\, highlighting writers who exemplify the development of this connection.

SUMMARY:Applications Open for the Emerging Filmmakers Program
DESCRIPTION:This groundbreaking initiative is set to support early-career\, female-identifying filmmakers by providing essential funding\, mentorship\, paid apprenticeships\, and bespoke marketing and distribution strategies for their original film projects. \nThe program is open to female-identifying filmmakers of all backgrounds and experiences in Washington State\, and is especially open to new artists with no film experience. It will support both short form and “microbudget” feature films. \nThe Emerging Filmmakers Program funding model is designed to prioritize equity and inclusion\, enabling Emergence Films to serve as patrons for filmmakers without imposing a list of requirements or restrictions on genre\, cast\, story\, or format. This liberating approach allows for unparalleled creative freedom of expression. \nThe journey from film school to directing a first feature has long been a gruelling challenge for women. The lack of access to financiers willing to support a bigger budget for a larger project compounds the difficulty. The Emerging Filmmakers Program aims to back women at this critical juncture\, providing the necessary financing to create career-defining films. \nIn its first cycle\, the program will focus on female-identifying filmmakers local to Washington State. Each selected team will consist of a director\, writer\, and producer\, fostering a collaborative and inclusive filmmaking environment. \nEach short film team will receive $10k in funding. To further support working filmmakers\, the program offers an ‘earn while you learn’ approach across all their educational offerings\, allowing participants to receive a living wage while they learn. \nREAD MORE & APPLY AT: https://emergencefilms.us/emerging-filmmaker-program/
