Within this context\, many Japanese intellectuals drew connections between their struggles and those of marginalized groups worldwide\, incorporating themes of revolution and resistance against oppressive regimes\, thus creating a rich cultural dialogue with other regions. \nJoin Matias Chiappe Ippolito (El Colegio de México) as he provides a brief history of the connections between Latin America\, left-wing politics\, and Japanese literature in the post-war period\, highlighting writers who exemplify the development of this connection.

DESCRIPTION:This groundbreaking initiative is set to support early-career\, female-identifying filmmakers by providing essential funding\, mentorship\, paid apprenticeships\, and bespoke marketing and distribution strategies for their original film projects. \nThe program is open to female-identifying filmmakers of all backgrounds and experiences in Washington State\, and is especially open to new artists with no film experience. It will support both short form and “microbudget” feature films. \nThe Emerging Filmmakers Program funding model is designed to prioritize equity and inclusion\, enabling Emergence Films to serve as patrons for filmmakers without imposing a list of requirements or restrictions on genre\, cast\, story\, or format. This liberating approach allows for unparalleled creative freedom of expression. \nThe journey from film school to directing a first feature has long been a gruelling challenge for women. The lack of access to financiers willing to support a bigger budget for a larger project compounds the difficulty. The Emerging Filmmakers Program aims to back women at this critical juncture\, providing the necessary financing to create career-defining films. \nIn its first cycle\, the program will focus on female-identifying filmmakers local to Washington State. Each selected team will consist of a director\, writer\, and producer\, fostering a collaborative and inclusive filmmaking environment. \nEach short film team will receive $10k in funding. DESCRIPTION:Urban ArtWorks offers the Mural Apprentice Program; an arts-based employment training program for teens who face barriers to the arts\, education\, and employment. Over each eight-week session\, apprentices work alongside professional teaching artists to learn basic art skills\, research\, design\, and install public art throughout King County\, WA. In addition to honing their painting skills\, teens develop the interpersonal and professional skills needed to thrive in a workplace. Though many participants are referred to us from our community partners\, we reserve some spaces each session for young people who come to us independently. We prioritize youth who are BIPOC\, LGBTQIA+\, and those who qualify for free and reduced lunch. Join Mongolian folk singer Yilina and friends from East Japan for an afternoon of special performances. \nYilina\, a renowned vocalist from Mongolia\, is coming back to Seattle for the first time since 2018\, when she headlined a benefit concert for recovery after the Great East Japan Earthquake\, leading a new group of performers for a new event. On Sun. 3/30\, you can enjoy their talents at a benefit concert at UW School of Music’s Brechemin Auditorium\, this time for those affected by the 2024 earthquake on the Noto Peninsula.\nTitled “Harmony across Cultures\,” the wide-ranging program will feature Mongolian and Japanese folk songs\, a performance on the shakuhachi flute\, songs from local Japanese choirs\, kagura ceremonial dance\, traditional Japanese dance\, and more. Before the curtains go up\, you can experience the sound of Japanese koto\, an introduction to tea ceremony\, and a panel with updated information about the situation on the Noto Peninsula\, all in the lobby.\nEntrance is free.
