DESCRIPTION:In this class\, Northwest Maritime Center will build a traditional Japanese Boat using the construction as a backdrop exploring both the technical aspects of boatbuilding but also the cultural underpinnings of apprentice learning. Students will work with Japanese hand tools used in boatbuilding and learn specific techniques such as fitting plant seems using saws and making nail holes with special chisels. The design and evolution of the Japanese boats will be discussed along with the loss of traditional skills and response in contemporary Japan.

DESCRIPTION:The Consulate-General of Japan in Seattle and the Holocaust Center for Humanity will host a panel discussion and screening of two films about Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara at the Broadway Performance Hall of Seattle Central College. Prior to the event\, there will be an opportunity to talk with the director of one of the films\, Junichi Kajioka\, with light refreshments served.  Chiune Sugihara served as vice Consul for the Japanese government in Kaunas\, Lithuania. During WWII\, Sugihara helped some six thousand Jews flee Europe by issuing visas to them so that they could travel through Japanese territory\, risking his job and his family’s lives. Over a two-hour period\, visitors will encounter dancers and musicians dispersed in surprising locations throughout the garden as the performers engage in a minute-by-minute response to all the scents\, sounds\, sights and sensations of the garden. \nAt Kubota Garden\, the performance will be held on July 28th from 12pm to 3pm. \nAt Seattle Japanese Garden\, the performance will be held on August 1st from 3:30pm to 6:30pm\, and the photo exhibition will be open until September 30th. \nThe first of two photo exhibitions opens on July 5 from 4-5 pm with live performance and refreshments at Fresh Flours in Greenwood. \n

SUMMARY:Quiet Hour: The Photography of Yukio Morinaga (1888–1968)
DESCRIPTION:This is the first solo exhibition of works by Seattle photographer Yukio Morinaga\, an important member of the Seattle Camera Club and one of the country’s leading pictorialist’s of the 1920’s. \nAll of the works in this exhibition are vintage bromide photographs\, printed by the artist. They were accepted in numerous international salons during his heyday and now assembled for this rare opportunity to view what the world’s experts once praised. Cascadia Art Museum will also be presenting a few artifacts that include two walking sticks that Morinaga hand-carved while interned at the Minidoka Relocation Center during WWII.
