SUMMARY:Podcast new episode | with Jay Rubin\, the author of The Sun Gods
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the second season of “beyond generations\,” a podcast by Monica. It is about the incarceration of the Japanese American people during WWII. Its focus is on what people today are doing so that we will learn about and from it and the history will not repeat itself. \nThe guest in this episode is Jay Rubin. He is the author of a novel the Sun Gods\, a story about a Caucasian boy and his adopted Japanese mother whose lives were separated at the mercy of World War II. The story takes you to Seattle\, to Camp Minidoka\, and to Japan – before\, during\, and after the war. \nJay Rubin is also one of the most distinguished English-language translators of Japanese literature. His work includes Haruki Murakami’s Norwegian Wood and 1Q84. \nIn this episode\, Jay will talk about how he got interested in studying Japanese\, how his moving to Seattle made him start working on the Sun Gods\, and how crucial it was for him to have a deep experience with the Japanese language and people to write this story. \nListen to this episode on Apple Podcasts\, Spotify\, Google Podcasts and Amazon Music. \nJoin our community on Instagram @beyondgenerations.seattle to learn more. \n(Jay Rubin photo by Gen Rubin)

SUMMARY:Podcast new episode | with David Yamaguchi\, the editor of the North American Post
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the second season of “beyond generations\,” a podcast by Monica. It is about the incarceration of Japanese American people during WWII. Its focus is on what people today are doing so that we will learn about and from it and the history will not repeat itself. \nThe guest in this episode is David Yamaguchi. He is the editor of the North American Post\, the community newspaper (yes\, this paper!) that has been serving Seattle’s Japanese American Community since 1902. \nIn this episode\, David will talk about how a stack of family letters he found in his parents’ basement helped him learn about his family history and how it guided father-son conversations that revealed some amazing facts about his father’s younger days including why he took a typewriter to Minidoka. \nYou will be surprised how little you know about the person who is behind the North American Post that is such a familiar face in Seattle’s Japanese American community. \nListen to this episode on Apple Podcasts\, Spotify\, Google Podcasts and Amazon Music. \nJoin our community on Instagram @beyondgenerations.seattle to learn more. \n(DY photo by Gwen Shigihara)

SUMMARY:Classical Japanese Dance: Performance\, Talk\, and Workshop with Kaya
DESCRIPTION:Nihon Buyo artist Kazuko Kaya Yamazaki will perform two solo pieces\, an excerpt from a Kabuki dance that premiered in 1820 and another from a celebratory piece danced to the oldest nagauta song\, composed around 1720. \nFollowing the performance\, Kaya will give a short talk about classical Japanese dance and what she has learned through her decades of experience as a performer\, teacher\, and anthropologist. \nAfter the short talk\, Kaya will give a workshop. No prior experience is necessary to participate. You may also choose to watch rather than participate. The workshop will have three parts. It will begin with basic foot\, hand\, and head movements and their combination. The second part will be about rhythmic patterns called yatton and tottan\, performed with stamping\, chanting\, and iki (breath). Finally\, participants will have a hands-on (literally!) experience of learning how to use the sensu (Japanese “fan” for dancing). \nAll ages are welcome.
