SUMMARY:Urban ArtWorks - Mural Apprentice Program
DESCRIPTION:Urban ArtWorks offers the Mural Apprentice Program; an arts-based employment training program for teens who face barriers to the arts\, education\, and employment. Over each eight-week session\, apprentices work alongside professional teaching artists to learn basic art skills\, research\, design\, and install public art throughout King County\, WA. In addition to honing their painting skills\, teens develop the interpersonal and professional skills needed to thrive in a workplace. Though many participants are referred to us from our community partners\, we reserve some spaces each session for young people who come to us independently. We prioritize youth who are BIPOC\, LGBTQIA+\, and those who qualify for free and reduced lunch. All youth apprentices receive a stipend. \nThis spring\, we are offering the Mural Apprentice Program (MAP) in Kirkland at Kirkland Arts Center\, in the Chinatown-International District at the Urban ArtWorks’ studio\, and in Burien at Highline High School. \nChinatown-International District MAP \nProgram Dates/Times:\nDates: March 4 – May 1 (no meetings April 14-18)\nTimes: Tuesdays\, Wednesdays\, and Thursdays\, 5pm – 7pm\nLocation: Urban ArtWorks Studio at 815 Seattle Blvd S Suite B7\, Seattle\, WA 98134 \nApplications are due by 11:59pm on February 7\, 2025.\nPriority will be given to those who submit on time\, however\, all applications will be accepted and youth may be put on a wait list.\nLearn more in the application: https://bit.ly/MAP_CID_Spring25 \nKirkland MAP \nProgram Dates/Times:\nDates: March 11 – May 7 (No meetings the week of April 14)\nTimes: Tuesdays and Wednesdays\, 5:00pm – 7:00pm\nLocation: Kirkland Arts Center at 620 Market Street\, Kirkland\, WA 98033 \nApplications are due by 11:59pm on February 12\, 2025.\nPriority will be given to those who submit on time\, however\, all applications will be accepted and youth may be put on a wait list.\nLearn more in the application: https://bit.ly/MAP_KAC_Spring25 \nBurien MAP \nThis MAP session is held in partnership with Highline High School. SUMMARY:Free film screening and discussion
DESCRIPTION:The Wakasa Memorial Committee will hold a livestream of three short films about the Wakasa memorial at 6 pm PDT with a discussion/Q&A. \nIt will focus on how the symbolic paper sculpture — the Wakasa Spirit Stone — came about and its life so far as a movable memorial to places where Nikkei were killed by the military at the WWII Japanese American concentration camps. \nThe paper stone has traveled to Topaz\, Utah; Tule Lake\, CA; and in two weeks it will be transported to the Manzanar Pilgrimage in eastern CA. It is placed at the sites where the shootings occurred. Forgotten histories. \nThe lantern also had an installation at the SF Asian Art Museum in February\, for Day of Remembrance. \nFriday commemorates the day that Wakasa was shot and killed 82 years ago. We decided to remember this day with a digital gathering around his lantern. \nThank you and hope to see you!
