Marrow Drive for Asian American Filmmaker February 20-21 in Seattle
Paul Goodman, a 29 year-old Asian American filmmaker from southern California, needs a marrow transplant in his battle with leukemia. A COVID-safe marrow donor drive to identify potential donors (18 – 44 years old) has been rescheduled for February 20th & 21st.
“It is difficult for patients like Paul, whose mother is Japanese and whose father is Caucasian, to find a donor match,” said Andrea Mano, one of the organizers of the marrow drive. “Adding more registry members of Asian and mixed Asian heritage increases the chances that patients like Paul can find the match they need.” Potential donors who are Asian or multi-racial, and other backgrounds, are urged to register at the event.
Over 12,000 people are currently looking for a donor; in the past 70% did not find a life-saving match.
The contactless, socially distanced event takes place Saturday, February 20 and Sunday, February 21, from 11 am to 3 pm, in the upper parking lot across from the Seattle Buddhist Temple (1427 South Main Street, Seattle, 98144).
Participants will drive up to register their information from their personal mobile device, self-administer a cheek swab and return the swab, all from the comfort and safety of their car. Registration and processing is free. Potential donors should be 18 – 44 years old, in good health, committed and willing to donate to anyone in need.
The event is co-sponsored by the Seattle Buddhist Betsuin Temple and Be The Match, a nonprofit organization formed to increase access to treatments for blood diseases. If you are unable to register at this event, you can sign-up online at join.bethematch.org/Hope4PaulWA
